According to the leading weather models ECMWF (European Weather Service), GFS (US Weather Service NOAA) and ICON (German Weather Service DWD), there is a risk of squalls, especially in northern Germany.

Forecasts suggest wind speeds of up to 90km/h could hit the region – a real threat to fireworks displays and outdoor New Year’s Eve celebrations. Experts advise keeping a close eye on weather warnings as the situation could worsen in the short term. Winter hammer: Weather expert predicts hurricanes and icy air from January

From New Year onwards the weather situation will continue to become more intense. Particularly in the middle of Germany, severe storms could rage, bringing hurricane-like gusts of up to 110 km/h even at low altitudes. Full-strength hurricanes are expected at higher altitudes.

Meteorologists are also warning of a dangerous shift in wind from the north, which will shove icy polar air into Germany. From the first weekend in January, permanent frost could affect large parts of the country, with daytime temperatures well below zero degrees.

With the arctic air mass, the nights in January become extremely cold. Temperatures could fall below minus 10 degrees in regions and even reach minus 20 degrees in some regions.
