“The new trees will grow quickly”
The construction site on Elisabethplatz in Görlitz is almost finished. Christian Düker always has an eye on them from his office. He followed everything closely for over a year.
Görlitz. Christian Düker will not soon forget those days in February 2023. “All the trees on upper Elisabethplatz were felled within two days,” recalls the head of press and public relations at the Senckenberg Museum in Görlitz. From his office on Marienplatz, he always has a view of Elisabethplatz. And this has been the case for almost 20 years.
He took up his position on February 1, 2005 and moved into his office overlooking the square. “I have always observed the course as the seasons change,” he says. As a biologist, he naturally has a special view of trees. They have definitely changed in the 18 years between February 2005 and February 2023. “They were just old,” says Düker: “In nature, offspring would have come up long ago.”

This didn’t happen on Elisabethplatz, only the leaves were attacked by the chestnut leaf miner or a tree was blown down during a storm. Düker lives on Lindenweg, where Elisabethplatz is also his route to work on some days. “It always happened that there was a tree lying across the square,” he remembers. In the end, there weren’t that many trees left: “There were now cars parked where trees once stood.”
