Super-G in Val Gardena: Casse wins hundredth thriller on the Saslong
The Italian Mattia Casse won the Super-G in Val Gardena with a hundredth of a second lead over the American Jared Goldberg.
In contrast to downhill, the famous camel humps on the Saslong in Val Gardena are not a major challenge for the speed specialists in Super-G, as they are virtually avoided. Nevertheless, the route below the Sassolungo is not a comfortable ride over the slopes due to the wind and changing light conditions at speeds of sometimes close to 120 km/h.
Vogt is racing in 16th place
The DSV last enjoyed a German success in Val Gardena in 2017. The winner was Josef Ferstl. This time, however, the German speed specialists were unable to take on a top role. The surprise was still included in the package at the end. 22-year-old Luis Vogt raced up to 16th place with starting number 59.
Goldberg is still on the podium
Italian Mattia Casse set the best time of 1:28.23 minutes in the “soft” snow. “The slope is good, not that hard“, I like “these conditions. You can’t drive too hard“, according to the winner’s analysis. The American Jared Goldberg surprisingly moved into second place. The 33-year-old was only a hundredth of a second short of Casse. As in the previous year, the Swiss ski star Marco Odermatt came third (+0.43 seconds. ).
Bearers of hope Jocher makes a mistake and is eliminated
The race was overshadowed by the crash of Austrian Daniel Danklmeier, who started the race in 18th place. An assessment of the type and severity of the injury was still pending. However, this meant that the race was interrupted for a long time.
Simon Jocher also had to keep the tension high as 21st in the starting order. The 28-year-old approached the competition smartly and was doing well in the race, but was eliminated after a big mistake. “He tried“, ARD expert Felix Neureuther nevertheless praised the trip. “There would have been a lot possible today.” But Jocher was most annoyed about the run: “It was a mistake that shouldn’t happen. I’m absolutely mad at myself“, said the Upper Bavarian.”This shouldn’t happen.”
Things went just a little better for veteran Romed Baumann. The 38-year-old only finished in a disappointing 37th place. Maximilian Schwarz was 56.
