St. Pauli is about to sign Freiburg’s Weißhaupt on loan

In terms of personnel, FC St. Pauli was recently in a state of emergency. Alexander Blessin had to complain about up to ten absences, but at the start of the new year’s training on January 2nd, the coach will have at least one reinforcement: Noah Weißhaupt from SC Freiburg is to be loaned out.

The loan deal, which is initially limited until the summer, makes sense for both sides. Because: While Karol Mets and Eric Smith will return soon in defense, there is still a long-term vacancy in midfield with Connor Metcalfe.

Blessin recently made it public that a comeback for the Australian, who is suffering from persistent adductor problems, is currently difficult to plan. The 25-year-old was in the center at the start of the season, then had to leave the Australian national team early in September due to muscular problems that were not initially diagnosed and has been on sick leave ever since.

Hardly any alternatives

Since Robert Wagner, also a loan player from Breisgau, had to miss out due to a muscle injury, the coach had hardly any alternatives to Carlo Boukhalfa and Jackson Irvine. The captain played despite muscular problems; only 17-year-old homegrown Marvin Schmitz was on the bench in the eighth position.

Weißhaupt is primarily a wing player, but this increases the overall scope, especially since Elias Saad will not be ready to play until the restart after his ankle surgery. The move to Hamburg also makes sense for the 23-year-old. To his 52 Bundesliga appearances (one goal) by the summer, he only added three more this season under new coach Julian Schuster. He played none of them in the starting line-up.

Weißhaupt urgently wants to gain match practice and was courted by several clubs from the bottom half of the table, but decided on St. Pauli shortly before Christmas. Completion will be officially announced in the following days.

The neighborhood club recently had good experiences with a winter loan from the Bundesliga – last January, sports director Andreas Bornemann brought Aljoscha Kemlein from Union Berlin for six months. The midfielder not only gained the desired practice, but was ultimately also an essential piece of the puzzle for promotion.
