At least 21 people were killed in 24 hours during nationwide protests against the certification of the election results in Mozambique.
At least 25 people, including 13 police officers, were injured in riots, Interior Minister Pascoal Ronda said on Tuesday evening.

Police officers among the dead
Two police officers were among the fatalities. According to Ronda, more than 70 people were arrested.
The protests began in the capital Maputo on Monday evening, with demonstrators setting up barricades and setting them on fire. Shops and public buildings were looted.

Election results disputed
Two and a half months after the presidential and parliamentary elections, the country’s highest court confirmed the controversial election victory of the ruling party Frelimo.
According to the Constitutional Council’s ruling announced on Monday, Frelimo presidential candidate Daniel Chapo received 65 percent of the vote on October 9th.

Opposition leader has left Mozambique
According to the Constitutional Council, opposition leader Venâncio Mondlane, who emigrated from the country in mid-October, won 24.2 percent of the vote. Mondlane declared himself the winner after the election and called for protests against the “rigged” ballot.
After the election, his lawyer was killed, Mondlane blamed security forces and left Mozambique. Frelimo has been in power in the southern African country since 1975.
