The past holidays once again gave TV audiences a large array of Christmas classics. However, if you didn’t want to turn to the well-known long-running favorites like “Home Alone” or “Actually Love…” for the umpteenth time, you could also find something else in the German TV program. The private broadcasters delivered some program items that were intended to create a festive mood.

Some rely on long-established formats with a Christmas twist, while some other channels prefer to show completely new shows. A risk that doesn’t always pay off – as ProSieben has now discovered.

ProSieben goes bad with its Christmas program

Among other things, ProSieben launched the “TV total” special “Xmas total” and its presenter Sebastian Pufpaff on Boxing Day. But he was unable to assert himself against the competition. And this despite the fact that the otherwise high-rating private broadcaster wanted to score points with its program specially put together for the holidays.

At the end of the day it was enough, according toDwdl” only accounts for a 6.8 percent market share in the advertising-relevant target group of 14 to 49 year olds. Not even channels like Kabel Eins could be declared war on Christmas with this value.

However, it will have been even more surprising that the secret weapon called “Joko and Klaas” could no longer save the disastrous ratings evening. While Pufpaff was able to attract 630,000 viewers at prime time, which was certainly not a brilliant achievement, the mark fell even further in the following hours.

ProSieben recorded another bankruptcy with “Christmas with Joko and Klaas”. The late night show that flickered across the screens at 10:45 p.m. was even less popular. The result: a devastating 4.7 percent market share.

RTL is also experiencing a decline in ratings

However, ProSieben is not the only broadcaster that was probably not able to achieve the numbers it had hoped for this Christmas. Because while RTL scored points with its “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?” special on Christmas Day, things were a little different the following evening.

As “Dwdl” further reports, the quiz show moderated by Günther Jauch was only able to get 460,000 people in front of the screen during prime time on December 26th. Although this still corresponds to a market share of 10.5 percent (and therefore significantly more than that of ProSieben), the private broadcaster is still recording a decline – RTL achieved almost three percentage points more the evening before.
